GIS capabilities, data structures, and spatial modeling form the core of geographic information science, enabling the effective management and analysis of spatial data. GIS capabilities include data capture, storage, visualization, and analysis, allowing researchers and planners to integrate diverse datasets into meaningful maps and models. The data structures used in GIS, such as raster (grid-based) and vector (point, line, polygon-based), provide flexible ways to represent geographic features and phenomena. Spatial modeling builds on these foundations by applying mathematical and computational techniques to simulate real-world processes, predict outcomes, and support decision-making. Examples include modeling urban growth, analyzing environmental change, or assessing disaster risks. Together, these elements make GIS a powerful tool for understanding spatial relationships, solving complex geographic problems, and guiding sustainable development in both environmental and urban contexts.
