Alternating Current Behaviour, Power, and Transformers 2

Alternating Current Behaviour, Power, and Transformers (series 4)

Physics 8 minutes 2 seconds Introduction to Electric Circuits and Electronics

Alternating current (AC) behaviour refers to the way electric current periodically reverses direction and varies in magnitude over time, typically following a sinusoidal waveform, which enables efficient transmission of electrical energy over long distances with reduced losses. In AC circuits, power is characterized by concepts such as real power (used to perform work), reactive power (stored and released by inductors and capacitors), and apparent power (the combined effect of both), often analyzed using phase relationships between voltage and current. Transformers play a crucial role in AC systems by using electromagnetic induction to step voltage levels up or down, thereby improving power transmission efficiency and making it suitable for safe distribution and consumption; their operation relies on the changing magnetic flux produced by alternating current, which would not function with direct current.
