Taxonomy and Classification of Nigerian Commercial Fish Species involve the scientific identification, naming, and grouping of fish species that are economically important in Nigeria's fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Taxonomy provides a systematic framework for distinguishing fish species based on their morphological, genetic, and ecological characteristics, while classification organizes them into hierarchical categories such as phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species. Nigerian commercial fish species include catfishes (Clarias spp. and Heterobranchus spp.), tilapias (Oreochromis spp.), bonga fish (Ethmalosa fimbriata), croakers (Pseudotolithus spp.), and mackerels, among others. Understanding the taxonomy and classification of these species is essential for accurate identification, fisheries management, biodiversity conservation, aquaculture development, and the sustainable utilization of aquatic resources, thereby supporting food security and economic growth in Nigeria.
