Chemical pollution arises from both natural and anthropogenic sources, including volcanic emissions, weathering of rocks, agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, and improper waste disposal, all of which introduce harmful substances such as heavy metals, pesticides, and hydrocarbons into soil, water, and air systems. To investigate these contaminants, geophysical techniques such as electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic methods, and seismic surveys are widely used, as they allow non-invasive detection of subsurface anomalies associated with polluted zones by measuring variations in physical properties like conductivity and dielectric permittivity. Through these techniques, scientists can delineate and assess chemical pollution plumes by mapping their spatial extent, movement, and concentration gradients, which is essential for understanding contaminant transport, evaluating environmental risks, and designing effective remediation strategies.
