The classification and types of landforms provide a systematic way to understand the diverse features of Earth’s surface by grouping them based on origin, structure, and processes of formation. Broadly, landforms are categorized into structural landforms, shaped by tectonic forces such as mountains, plateaus, and rift valleys; erosional landforms, carved by agents like rivers, glaciers, and wind, including valleys, canyons, and cirques; and depositional landforms, created by the accumulation of sediments, such as deltas, sand dunes, and alluvial fans. They can also be classified by scale into major landforms like continents and ocean basins, and minor landforms such as hills, caves, and beaches. This classification helps geomorphologists trace the processes behind landscape evolution, interpret environmental history, and predict future changes in terrain.
