Measures of central tendency and variability are essential statistical concepts used to summarize and interpret data by describing its typical value and the extent of its spread. The measures of central tendency—mean, median, and mode—identify the central point around which data values cluster, giving a sense of the dataset’s “average” behavior. In contrast, the measures of variability—range, variance, and standard deviation—show how much the data values differ from one another and from the central point, indicating consistency or dispersion within the dataset. Together, these measures provide a balanced view: central tendency highlights the representative value, while variability reveals the reliability and diversity of the data. This combination is crucial in research and decision-making, as it allows analysts to understand both the typical outcome and the degree of uncertainty or fluctuation in the information being studied.
