Data types and characteristics describe the forms and qualities of information used in research, shaping how data is collected, organized, and interpreted. Broadly, data can be classified into qualitative (non-numerical, descriptive information such as opinions, categories, or observations) and quantitative (numerical values that can be measured and analyzed statistically). Within these, data may take forms such as nominal (labels or names), ordinal (ranked categories), interval (numerical values without a true zero), and ratio (numerical values with a meaningful zero). Key characteristics include accuracy, reliability, validity, consistency, and scale, which determine the usefulness of data in analysis. Understanding these types and properties ensures that researchers apply the right methods for interpretation, leading to valid conclusions and meaningful insights across disciplines.
