Arabic rhetoric (ʿIlm al-Balāghah) is traditionally divided into three main branches: Al-Maʿānī, Al-Bayān, and Al-Badīʿ. Al-Maʿānī deals with the appropriate arrangement of words and sentences according to the context and purpose of speech. Al-Bayān focuses on different ways of expressing an idea clearly and effectively, including simile (tashbīh), metaphor (istiʿārah), and metonymy (kināyah).
