Non-Segmental Features: Tones, Stress, and Intonation refer to the suprasegmental aspects of speech that extend beyond individual sounds and influence the meaning, pronunciation, and rhythm of spoken language. Tone involves variations in pitch that can distinguish word meanings, especially in tonal languages such as Yoruba, Hausa, and Mandarin Chinese. Stress refers to the relative emphasis placed on certain syllables or words, making them more prominent within speech and often affecting meaning and pronunciation. Intonation is the pattern of pitch movement across phrases and sentences, helping to express emotions, attitudes, and grammatical functions such as statements, questions, and commands. Together, tones, stress, and intonation play a crucial role in effective communication by enhancing clarity, conveying meaning, and adding expressiveness to spoken language.
