Definition and Scope of Phonetics refers to the branch of linguistics that studies the production, transmission, and perception of speech sounds in human language. Phonetics examines how sounds are articulated by the speech organs, how they travel through the air as sound waves, and how they are received and interpreted by the human ear and brain. The scope of phonetics is broad and includes articulatory phonetics, which focuses on how speech sounds are produced; acoustic phonetics, which analyzes the physical properties of sound waves; and auditory phonetics, which investigates how speech sounds are heard and processed. By studying these aspects, phonetics provides a scientific understanding of speech communication, language learning, pronunciation, speech disorders, and the diversity of sound systems found in languages around the world.
