Foundations of Conflict Modeling explores the theoretical and analytical frameworks used to understand, represent, and predict conflict situations in various contexts, including social, political, and international environments. It examines key concepts such as the nature of conflicts, actors involved, interests, strategies, and outcomes, as well as the use of models—such as game theory, decision analysis, and systems approaches—to simulate conflict dynamics and support effective resolution strategies. The topic emphasizes how systematic modeling helps in identifying patterns, anticipating behavior, and designing appropriate interventions for conflict management and peacebuilding. Course objectives include enabling learners to understand the basic concepts and approaches to conflict modeling, identify components and types of conflicts, analyze how models are used to study conflict behavior, and develop skills to apply conflict modeling techniques in problem-solving and decision-making contexts.
This lecture is part of PCR 402 Conflict Modeling and Peace Building in the Peace and Conflict Studies department. The course has 28 recorded lectures across 14 series, all free to watch.
