This course examines the diverse ways in which languages organize and express morphological information. It introduces students to the concept of morphological typology and the classification of languages based on their word-formation patterns and grammatical structures. The course explores major morphological types, including isolating, agglutinative, fusional, and polysynthetic languages, highlighting their distinctive characteristics and linguistic features. Students will analyze examples from a variety of world languages to understand how different language systems encode meaning, grammatical relationships, and lexical information. Through comparative study and morphological analysis, learners will develop an appreciation of linguistic diversity and gain insights into the universal and language-specific aspects of word structure and formation.
