It involves the transition from non-democratic forms of governance to systems that emphasise participation, representation, and accountability. For Nigeria and other developing democracies, understanding the conceptual and theoretical foundations of democratisation is crucial, as it provides the intellectual tools to analyse both the successes and challenges of democratic practice. This Series therefore sets the stage for the entire course by equipping you with the basic ideas and frameworks that underpin democratisation studies. The aim of this Series is to introduce you to the key concepts and theoretical perspectives of democratisation, and to enable you to critically analyse how these ideas apply to political development, particularly in Nigeria. We shall commence this Series by exploring the meaning and importance of democratisation, highlighting its defining features and relevance to political development. Next, we will examine major theoretical approaches, including liberal democratic theory, modernisation theory,

Finally, we will wrap up by addressing conceptual issues such as the distinction between democratisation and democratic consolidation, the role of elections, and the challenges of defining democratisation in practice. This sequential flow will provide you with a strong foundation for the subsequent Series in the course. Series Learning Outcomes Upon completing this Series, you should be able to: SLO 1.1 define the concept of democratisation and identify its core features, SLO 1.2 explain the importance of democratisation in political development, SLO 1.3 analyse the major theoretical approaches to democratisation, including liberal democratic, modernisation, structural, institutional, and agency-centred perspectives, SLO 1.4 distinguish between democratisation and democratic consolidation, SLO 1.5 evaluate the role of elections as instruments of democratisation, and SLO 1.6 examine the conceptual challenges involved in studying democratisation 1.1 Understanding Democratisation 1.1.1 Definition of Democratisation Democratisation refers to the process through which a political system transitions from non-democratic forms of governance, such as authoritarianism or military rule, to democratic systems that emphasise participation, representation, and accountability. It is not a single event but a gradual transformation that involves institutional reforms, cultural shifts, and political struggles. Democratisation is therefore both a political and social process, requiring the active involvement of citizens, political actors, and institutions. Fill in the blank: Democratisation is the process through which a political system transitions from ______ forms of governance to democratic systems.

Other features include the protection of civil liberties, such as freedom of speech and association, and the existence of rule of law, where laws apply equally to all citizens.
