Zamfara Signs New Education Reform Orders, Begins Distribution of National Curriculum

The Zamfara State Government has introduced a series of education reforms aimed at improving school administration, student welfare, and the overall quality of learning across public schools. Governor Dauda Lawal signed several Executive Orders on Tuesday during a meeting with education stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau. The event also marked the official launch of the distribution of the national curriculum to public schools across the state. According to a statement issued by the governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the reforms establish a comprehensive framework covering education financing, school safety, quality assurance, health services, and security. The new measures also address school governance, student welfare, school feeding programmes, transportation safety, unified examinations, inclusive education, and the regulation of graduation ceremonies. In addition, the reforms promote merit-based appointments for school leadership and place greater emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as digital education. Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal described education as a vital tool for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security, and driving economic development. He said the newly signed Executive Orders represent a broad governance framework designed to improve accountability, enhance school management, safeguard educational assets, and raise learning standards across the state. The governor noted that while previous reforms largely focused on infrastructure such as classrooms and laboratories, improving educational outcomes also requires stronger institutions, effective policies, and better governance. Also speaking, the Zamfara State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, stressed that meaningful education reform depends on cooperation among government, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners, and the private sector. He expressed confidence that the reforms would lead to safer schools, improved teaching standards, stronger governance, healthier learning environments, and increased public trust in the state's education system.
