Covenant University, a private institution in Ota, Ogun State, has been ranked Nigeria's best university for the second consecutive year in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. It's also the only Nigerian university in the global top 1,000. The number of Nigerian universities reaching the top spot has declined for three straight years — from three in 2023, to two in 2024, to just one this year. THE ranked universities across three core missions — research, teaching, and impact — using 18 performance indicators grouped into five categories: Teaching (29.5%), Research Environment (29%), Research Quality (30%), International Outlook (7.5%), and Industry (income and patents, 4%).
