Special Needs Student Wins Nile University Scholarship at BBA Graduation

A special needs student, Adaeze Okeke, has been awarded a scholarship to study at Nile University of Nigeria, announced during the 2026 graduation ceremony of Beautiful Beginning Academy (BBA) held on Friday. The scholarship was unveiled by Okechi Uchechukwu, Managing Director of AFRIQUE Investments and Infrastructure Partners, in recognition of Adaeze's resilience and determination. The ceremony's keynote speaker, Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, was separately honoured by the school with a "Beacon of Education" award for her contributions to education and youth development. Ike, visibly moved by the recognition, chose to dedicate the award to Adaeze after hearing her story. "I wasn't expecting this... when I was called on, I had to wipe my tears because of the story of Adaeze. Her story made me tear. It made me cry. And I'm dedicating this award to her," she said, pledging to use her platform to advocate for children, especially those with special needs. In her keynote address to the graduating class, Ike emphasised that character, not academic performance, ultimately determines success in life. She told students that although their classroom exams were over, life's tests — of honesty, discipline, resilience and integrity — would continue. "Knowledge may make you intelligent, but character will make you unforgettable," she said, adding that reputation outlasts both grades and certificates. Ike also encouraged the graduates to view setbacks as part of the path to success rather than as failure. "Failure is not the opposite of success; it is often the road that leads to it," she said, urging them to stay curious, read widely, choose friends carefully, and believe in their own potential. She commended parents for their sacrifices and praised the teachers and management of Beautiful Beginning Academy for their role in shaping the graduating students. Ike closed her address by challenging the students to become problem-solvers who build bridges rather than barriers, and to carry forward values of excellence, integrity, service, and compassion.
