FG unveils mobile learning initiative for female teachers.
The Federal Government has partnered with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa and the Pan African University to launch a mobile learning initiative designed to strengthen the professional development of teachers and school leaders across Nigeria and four other African countries.
The initiative was unveiled in Abuja with the commencement of a three day Master Training Programme aimed at equipping educators with innovative mobile learning tools that can improve teaching quality and expand access to continuous professional development.
The programme, which runs from July 21 to July 23, 2026, places particular emphasis on supporting female teachers and school leaders through flexible, technology driven learning opportunities.
Five African Countries to Benefit
The initiative is being implemented under UNESCO IICBA's broader efforts to strengthen teacher capacity across Africa.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the programme targets five countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan.
The initiative is themed, "Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile based Learning in the Pan African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative."
It is designed to provide educators with opportunities to access professional training without being restricted by their location or traditional classroom schedules.
Through the programme, teachers and school leaders will be introduced to mobile learning tools that allow them to access educational resources and professional development materials using digital devices.
Removing Barriers to Teacher Training
The Federal Ministry of Education said the initiative was developed partly to address some of the challenges that prevent teachers from participating in regular professional development programmes.
Among the barriers identified are geographical limitations, inadequate infrastructure and time constraints.
For teachers working in rural or underserved communities, travelling to training centres can be difficult and expensive. Traditional professional development programmes can also require educators to leave their schools or take time away from their regular responsibilities.
The mobile learning approach is intended to provide a more flexible alternative.
According to the ministry, the platform is designed to be low data and offline friendly, allowing educators to access learning resources from different locations and at times that are convenient for them.
This could make professional development more accessible to teachers who may otherwise struggle to participate in conventional training programmes.
Focus on Female Teachers
A major feature of the initiative is its focus on female teachers and school leaders.
