Evolution of Nigeria as a Political Unit examines the historical processes that led to the formation and development of Nigeria as a unified political entity. It traces the evolution of the territory from pre-colonial kingdoms, emirates, and societies through British colonial conquest, administration, and the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates in 1914, culminating in independence and the emergence of modern Nigeria. The topic explores the political, social, and economic factors that shaped national integration, federalism, governance, and state formation, while highlighting the challenges and achievements of nation-building in a culturally diverse society. Course objectives include enabling learners to understand the historical development of Nigeria as a political unit, analyze key events and policies that influenced its formation, evaluate the impact of colonial and post-colonial political developments, and develop critical insights into the processes of national integration, governance, and political stability in Nigeria.
