This series introduces students to the study of corpus linguistics, language assessment, and language policy as important areas of applied linguistics. It examines how large collections of spoken and written texts (corpora) are used to analyze language patterns, usage, variation, and change. Students will explore the principles and methods of language testing, including test design, validity, reliability, and the evaluation of language proficiency. The course also investigates the formulation, implementation, and impact of language policies in multilingual and multicultural societies, with particular attention to issues of language planning, language rights, education, and national development. Through theoretical and practical approaches, learners will gain an understanding of how linguistic data, assessment practices, and policy decisions influence language teaching, learning, and communication in diverse contexts.
This lecture is part of LIN 104 Survey of Applied Linguistics in the Linguistics department. The course has 7 recorded lectures across 2 series, all free to watch. Read or download the LIN 104 lecture note to study alongside the video.
