Mechanisms of adjudication and dispute settlement in international law are designed to provide peaceful and structured ways of resolving conflicts between states and other international actors. These mechanisms include judicial bodies such as the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which settles disputes based on treaties, customary law, and general principles of law, as well as arbitration tribunals that allow parties to appoint neutral arbitrators to deliver binding decisions. Additionally, diplomatic methods like negotiation, mediation, and conciliation are often employed to reach mutually acceptable solutions without resorting to force. The United Nations also plays a central role, particularly through its Security Council, in maintaining peace and addressing disputes that threaten international stability. Together, these mechanisms uphold the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes, ensuring that disagreements are managed through law, dialogue, and cooperation rather than conflict.
