Electrical prospecting is a fundamental geophysical method used to investigate subsurface structures by measuring the electrical properties of the earth. The theory behind it is based on the principle that different geological formations and mineral deposits exhibit varying electrical resistivity and conductivity. By introducing an electrical current into the ground and recording the resulting potential differences, geophysicists can infer the distribution of materials beneath the surface. This technique has wide applications, including mineral exploration, groundwater detection, environmental studies, and engineering site investigations. The introduction to electrical prospecting emphasizes both the theoretical foundation—such as Ohm’s law, current flow in heterogeneous media, and electrode configurations—and its practical applications, where resistivity surveys, induced polarization, and electromagnetic methods are employed to map subsurface features with precision.
