Electrostatics is the branch of physics that studies electric charges at rest and the forces they exert on each other. It explains how charges interact through the electric field, an invisible region around a charged object where other charges experience a force. Positive and negative charges attract or repel depending on their nature, and this interaction is quantified by Coulomb’s law, which states that the force between two charges depends on their magnitudes and the distance between them. The concept of electric field lines helps visualize the direction and strength of these forces, showing how charges influence the space around them. Electrostatics is fundamental in understanding phenomena such as capacitors, lightning, and everyday effects like static cling.
