The philosophical foundations of geographical research provide the intellectual basis for how geographers understand, interpret, and study the relationship between humans and the environment. Rooted in traditions of positivism, humanism, phenomenology, and critical theory, these foundations shape the questions asked, the methods applied, and the interpretations made in geographical inquiry. They address fundamental issues such as the nature of space, place, and environment; the role of values and ethics in research; and the balance between objective scientific analysis and subjective human experience. By engaging with these philosophical perspectives, geographical research moves beyond mere description of landscapes to deeper exploration of meaning, power, and interconnectedness, ensuring that geography remains both a scientific and humanistic discipline.
