This series offers an academic exploration of the political, socio-cultural, economic, and security challenges that confront federal systems across the world. Students will examine the tensions that arise in federal arrangements — including fiscal imbalances between tiers of government, ethnic and regional conflicts, issues of resource control, threats to national unity, and the strains of managing diversity within a shared political framework. Through comparative analysis, students develop a critical understanding of why federal systems, despite their advantages, often face significant pressures that test their stability and effectiveness.
This lecture is part of POL306 Comparative Federalism in the Political Science department. The course has 14 recorded lectures across 7 series, all free to watch. Read or download the POL306 lecture note to study alongside the video.
