Crude petroleum and natural gas are naturally occurring fossil fuels formed from the remains of plants and animals buried under the earth for millions of years. They are mainly composed of hydrocarbons, with small amounts of compounds containing sulphur, nitrogen and oxygen.
Crude petroleum is a complex liquid mixture of hydrocarbons. It is generally classified according to its density and chemical composition, such as paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic crude oils. Its composition includes alkanes, cycloalkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, together with small quantities of sulphur, nitrogen, oxygen and mineral impurities. The exact composition varies depending on its source.
