LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS context. This Series prepares you to recognise these dynamics and to appreciate how they shape opportunities and strategic decisions in the business landscape. The aim of this Series is to guide you through the major management challenges that Nigerian organisations encounter and to help you examine how these challenges influence the corporate outlook of businesses operating within the country. We shall commence this Series by exploring the contemporary management challenges that Nigerian organisations face. Next, we will examine the corporate outlook in Nigeria, with attention to the business environment and emerging high-potential sectors. Following that, we will consider the importance of being proactive in anticipating both local and global environmental dynamics. Finally, we will conclude by discussing why a paradigm shift is needed in Nigerian organisations and how such a shift contributes to progress. Series Learning Outcomes Upon completing this Series, you should be able to: SLO 1.1 describe key contemporary management challenges affecting Nigerian organisations, SLO 1.2 explain how the Nigerian business environment shapes corporate outlook, SLO 1.3 analyse the importance of anticipating local and global environmental dynamics, and SLO 1.4 evaluate the need for a paradigm shift within Nigerian organisations. 1.1 Contemporary Management Challenges In Nigeria 1.1.1 Economic and environmental pressures Nigeria’s business environment is shaped by a combination of economic realities and environmental conditions that influence how organisations operate. One of the most significant issues is economic instability, which refers to fluctuations in key indicators such as inflation, exchange rates, and interest rates. These fluctuations affect the cost of production, access to capital, and the purchasing power of consumers. When inflation rises, for example, organisations may struggle to maintain stable pricing, and this can lead to reduced profitability. Another important concept is environmental uncertainty, defined as the unpredictability of external conditions that influence organisational decisions. This includes political changes, regulatory shifts, and natural resource constraints. When the external environment becomes unpredictable, managers must make decisions with incomplete information, which increases the risk of strategic errors. At this point, you may pause and consider the following: ___ affects the cost of production and can reduce consumer purchasing power.

These issues increase operational costs and reduce efficiency. Organisations often resort to alternative power sources, which further raises expenses. As you reflect on this, consider the following: The unpredictability of external conditions that influence organisational decisions is known as ___.

Limited access to modern technologies, high implementation costs, and inadequate digital skills among employees often slow down this process. When organisations fail to adopt relevant technologies, they risk falling behind competitors who operate more efficiently. Globalisation also introduces competitive pressure, defined as the increased intensity of competition resulting from the entry of foreign firms and global market integration. Nigerian organisations must now compete not only with local businesses but also with international companies that may have superior technology, stronger financial resources, or more efficient processes. This situation requires managers to rethink their strategies and explore innovative ways to remain relevant. Consumers increasingly demand faster service, online accessibility, and personalised experiences. Organisations that cannot meet these expectations may lose market share. Reflect on this point: The

One major concern is skills mismatch, which refers to a gap between the skills employees possess and the skills organisations require. This mismatch often results from inadequate training, outdated educational curricula, or rapid changes in job requirements due to technological advancement. When employees lack the necessary competencies, productivity declines and organisational goals become harder to achieve. Another key concept is employee resistance, defined as the reluctance or refusal of workers to accept organisational changes. Resistance may arise from fear of job loss, lack of understanding, or discomfort with new processes. Managers must therefore communicate effectively and provide adequate support to help employees adjust. You may reflect on this by filling in the following: A gap between the skills employees possess and the skills required by organisations is known as ___. LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Organisational behaviour challenges also include low motivation, poor leadership styles, and weak organisational culture. These factors influence how employees behave, how committed they feel, and how effectively they perform their duties. When organisational culture is weak, employees may lack a sense of direction or shared purpose, which can hinder overall performance. Pilot questions 1.1 1. Which term describes the unpredictability of external conditions that influence organisational decisions? 2. What is the process of integrating new tools or digital systems into business operations called? 3. Which concept refers to increased competition resulting from global market integration? 4. What term describes a gap between employee skills and organisational requirements? 5. Which factor often causes employees to resist organisational changes? 1.2 Corporate Outlook In Nigeria 1.2.1 Understanding the Nigerian business environment The Nigerian business environment is shaped by a combination of economic, social, political, and infrastructural factors that influence how organisations operate and make strategic decisions. A useful starting point is the concept of the business environment, defined as the collection of external conditions, forces, and institutions that affect an organisation’s operations and performance. These conditions include government policies, market structures, cultural norms, and the availability of resources. When these elements shift, organisations must adjust their strategies to remain competitive. Nigeria’s business environment is often described as dynamic because conditions change rapidly. For example, policy reforms, currency fluctuations, and shifts in consumer behaviour can alter market conditions within a short period. Managers must therefore remain alert and responsive. Consider the following as you reflect on this: The collection of external conditions that influence an organisation’s operations is known as the ___. The country has a large population, growing urban centres, and expanding digital connectivity. These features create demand for goods and services across various sectors. However, challenges such as regulatory inconsistencies, infrastructural gaps, and security concerns can complicate business operations. Managers must therefore balance opportunity with risk. 1.2.2 Emerging high-potential sectors Despite the challenges in the Nigerian business environment, several sectors continue to show strong potential for growth. One of these is the technology sector, which refers to
