It provides the context within which entrepreneurial activities take place, shaping both the possibilities available to entrepreneurs and the constraints they must navigate. In Nigeria, this landscape is shaped by factors such as cultural norms, economic structures, government policies, and global trends, all of which interact to influence entrepreneurial behaviour.

Nigeria’s economic structure often presents both opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs, especially in sectors such as agriculture, services, and manufacturing. A further feature is the political environment, defined as the system of government policies, regulations, and political stability that affects business operations. Political decisions can either support or hinder entrepreneurial activities, depending on how they are implemented. Additionally, the technological environment, which includes the availability and use of digital tools, communication systems, and innovation platforms, plays a growing role in shaping entrepreneurial opportunities in Nigeria. Why is it important for entrepreneurs to understand the entrepreneurial landscape? 1.2 Socio-Cultural Foundations of Entrepreneurship in Nigeria 1.2.1 Influence of cultural values on entrepreneurial behaviour Cultural values play a significant role in shaping how individuals in Nigeria perceive and engage in entrepreneurial activities. Cultural values refer to the shared beliefs, traditions, and behavioural expectations that guide how members of a society act and make decisions. These values influence attitudes towards risk taking, innovation, cooperation, and the types of ventures people are willing to pursue. For example, in some Nigerian communities, entrepreneurship is viewed as a respected pathway to social mobility, while in others, salaried employment may be seen as more prestigious. In many parts of Nigeria, cultural values emphasise family responsibility and communal support. This can encourage entrepreneurship by providing informal networks that offer advice, labour, or financial assistance. However, cultural expectations can also create pressure, such as the obligation to share profits widely, which may affect business growth. Understanding these cultural influences helps entrepreneurs make informed decisions about how to structure and manage their ventures.
