This introductory series examines how states are classified within the global political economy and explores the major theoretical frameworks used to explain development and under-development. Students will survey the key distinctions between developed, developing, and underdeveloped nations, and critically engage with dominant development theories including modernisation theory, dependency theory, and world systems theory. It establishes the conceptual foundation for understanding why some nations prosper while others remain trapped in cycles of poverty and underdevelopment, with particular attention to the African and Global South context.

This series offers an academic exploration of how historical domination and modern mechanisms of control continue to shape global inequalities, development patterns, and international relations. Students will examine the origins and structures of European colonialism, its devastating impact on Africa and the Global South, and how neo-colonial practices through trade agreements, foreign aid, multinational corporations, and international institutions perpetuate dependency and underdevelopment in formerly colonized nations. It provides a critical lens for understanding the deep historical roots of contemporary global inequality.
