Petroleum, commonly called crude oil, remains one of the most important sources of energy in the contemporary world. It supplies fuels such as petrol, diesel, kerosene and jet fuel and is also a major raw material for plastics, chemicals, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and other industries. Despite the rapid growth of renewable energy and electric vehicles, global oil demand remains very large—OPEC reports average world oil demand of about 105.15 million barrels per day in 2025
Crude petroleum and natural gas are naturally occurring fossil fuels formed from the buried remains of plants and animals over millions of years. They occur mainly in porous sedimentary rocks beneath the earth’s surface. Petroleum is a liquid mixture, while natural gas is predominantly a gaseous hydrocarbon mixture.
