Military and democratic rule have both played significant roles in Nigeria’s political evolution since independence in 1960. The country experienced several military coups and prolonged periods of military governance, during which political power was centralized, civil liberties were often restricted, and constitutional processes were suspended. However, these periods were also marked by efforts at maintaining national unity and implementing certain reforms. In contrast, democratic rule, particularly since the return to civilian governance in 1999, has emphasized constitutional order, regular elections, political participation, and the protection of fundamental rights. The interplay between military and democratic systems has shaped Nigeria’s political institutions, governance practices, and ongoing efforts to achieve political stability, accountability, and sustainable development.
