Archaeology in Nigeria refers to the study of the country’s past through the excavation and analysis of material remains such as artifacts, tools, pottery, and ancient settlements. It has revealed rich and diverse civilizations, including the Nok culture, known for its terracotta sculptures, as well as the advanced urban centers of Ife and Benin, famous for their art and craftsmanship. Archaeological findings provide valuable insights into early technological development, trade networks, social organization, and cultural practices in Nigeria long before written records. Through this discipline, historians and researchers are able to reconstruct aspects of Nigeria’s pre-colonial history, preserving its heritage and deepening understanding of its historical continuity and identity
