The colonial foundation of Nigeria’s economy was established during British rule, which shaped its structure to serve the interests of the colonial power rather than local development. The economy was oriented toward the extraction and export of raw materials such as palm oil, cocoa, groundnuts, and later minerals, while Nigeria imported manufactured goods from Britain. Colonial policies introduced cash crop production, modern transportation systems like railways and ports to facilitate trade, and a monetary system that integrated Nigeria into the global capitalist economy. However, these developments also led to regional economic specialization, dependence on exports, and limited industrial growth, laying a foundation of economic imbalance and dependency that has continued to influence Nigeria’s economic challenges after independence.
