Introduction to General Phonetics and Phonology II is an intermediate-level course that builds upon the foundational concepts of speech sounds and sound systems in language. The course examines the production, classification, transcription, and analysis of speech sounds, with emphasis on articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics. It also explores phonological concepts such as phonemes, allophones, distinctive features, syllable structure, stress, intonation, tone, and phonological processes such as assimilation, elision, and assimilation. Students are introduced to the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for phonetic transcription and are equipped with analytical skills for examining sound patterns in English and other languages.
