This course explores the concept of pitch accent systems and their relationship to tone in African languages. While many African languages are traditionally classified as tonal, some exhibit accentual properties where pitch prominence is assigned to specific syllables or words. Students will examine the differences between tone languages, pitch accent systems, and stress-accent systems, gaining an understanding of how these prosodic features contribute to meaning, grammar, and communication.
The course investigates tonal tendencies across diverse African language families, highlighting how pitch patterns vary across regions and linguistic communities. Topics include lexical and grammatical functions of pitch, interactions between tone and accent, historical developments of prosodic systems, and comparative analyses of selected African languages.
Through theoretical discussions, linguistic data analysis, and practical examples, learners will develop the skills necessary to identify and describe pitch accent phenomena and tonal patterns in African languages. By the end of the course, participants will have a deeper appreciation of the richness and diversity of African prosodic systems and their significance in linguistic research.
This lecture is part of LIN 306 Tone Systems in the Linguistics department. The course has 45 recorded lectures across 10 series, all free to watch. Read or download the LIN 306 lecture note to study alongside the video.
