This course explores the relationship between tone, segmental features, and grammatical structures in language. It examines how tones interact with consonants and vowels, how segmental changes can influence tonal patterns, and how tone functions as a grammatical marker in various languages. Learners will investigate the role of tone in expressing tense, aspect, mood, number, possession, and other grammatical distinctions.
The course also introduces key concepts such as tone spreading, tone deletion, tone stability, tone shift, and the interaction between tone and morphosyntactic processes. Through theoretical discussions and practical analyses of data from African and other tonal languages, students will develop the skills needed to identify and explain tone–segment and tone–grammar relationships.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to analyze tonal phenomena within grammatical contexts, understand the contribution of tone to meaning and structure, and apply linguistic principles to the study of tonal systems across languages.
This lecture is part of LIN 306 Tone Systems in the Linguistics department. The course has 45 recorded lectures across 10 series, all free to watch. Read or download the LIN 306 lecture note to study alongside the video.
