Economic Policies and the Colonial State (POL 102 – Series 3)
This course explores the structure and impact of colonial economic policies in Africa. It examines how colonial administrations designed systems of taxation, labor, and production to benefit European economies while transforming African societies. Students will analyze the introduction of cash crops, resource extraction, and trade controls, and how these reshaped indigenous economies and social structures. The course also considers the long-term consequences of these policies on Africa’s economic development and contemporary challenges.
This lecture is part of Pol102 Introduction to African Politics in the Political Science department. The course has 26 recorded lectures across 11 series, all free to watch. Read or download the Pol102 lecture note to study alongside the video.
