One of the most fundamental topics is the study of systems of linear equations, which appear in diverse contexts such as modelling networks, balancing chemical equations, and analysing economic systems. Closely related to this is the concept of change of basis, which allows us to view vectors and transformations from different perspectives, simplifying calculations and revealing deeper structure. This Series therefore sets the stage for much of what follows in the course. The aim of this Series is to equip you with the ability to recognise, represent, and solve systems of linear equations using various methods, and to explain and apply the concept of change of basis in vector spaces. We shall commence this Series by examining systems of linear equations, their representation, and methods of solution. Next, we will consider matrix representation and solution techniques, including augmented matrices, row operations, and the role of rank. Finally, we will wrap up by exploring the concept of change of basis, focusing on transition matrices, coordinate transformations, and their applications in simplifying problems.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS • SLO 1.1 define systems of linear equations and describe their representation in algebraic and matrix form, • SLO 1.2 demonstrate methods of solving systems of linear equations, including substitution, elimination, and matrix approaches, • SLO 1.3 analyse the consistency of systems and classify solutions as unique, infinite, or non-existent, • SLO 1.4 apply matrix representation techniques such as augmented matrices and row operations to solve linear systems, • SLO 1.5 explain the concept of rank and evaluate its role in determining solutions of systems of equations, • SLO 1.6 describe the concept of basis in vector spaces and explain how change of basis affects coordinate representation, • SLO 1.7 calculate transition matrices and apply them to perform coordinate transformations, and • SLO 1.8 evaluate practical applications of change of basis in simplifying linear algebra problems 1.1 Systems Of Linear Equations 1.1.1 Definition and representation of systems A system of linear equations is a collection of two or more linear equations involving the same set of variables. Each equation represents a straight line in two dimensions or a plane in higher dimensions. The solution to the system is the set of values for the variables that satisfies all equations simultaneously. For example, the system: x+y=5,2x-y=1 represents two lines in the plane. The point where they intersect is the solution to the system. Matrix form of representation: Systems of equations can be expressed compactly using matrices. The coefficients form a coefficient matrix, the variables form a vector, and the constants form another vector. For the system above: 1 1 2 -1 x y =5 1 .
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS representation of a system of linear equations Fill in the blank: A system of linear equations is solved by finding values of variables that satisfy ______ equations simultaneously. 1.1.2 Methods of solution There are several methods for solving systems of linear equations:
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Substitution method: Solve one equation for a variable and substitute into the other. Elimination method: Add or subtract equations to eliminate a variable. Matrix methods: Use augmented matrices and row operations to systematically solve. Example (elimination method): x+y=5,2x-y=1 Add the two equations: 3x=6⇒x=2. Substitute into the first equation: 2+y=5⇒y=3. So, the solution is 3.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Methods of solving systems of linear equations Fill in the blank: The elimination method works by adding or subtracting equations to remove a ______. 1.1.3 Consistency and types of solutions A system may be: Consistent with a unique solution: The equations intersect at a single point.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Consistent with infinitely many solutions: The equations represent the same line or plane. Inconsistent: The equations represent parallel lines or planes that never meet. Example: x+y=5,2x-y=1→ unique solution. x+y=5,2x+2y=10→ infinitely many solutions. x+y=5,x+y=6→ no solution.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Types of solutions in systems of linear equations Fill in the blank: A system with no solution is called ______. Pilot Questions 1.1 A system of linear equations can be represented compactly using a: A. Vector space B. Matrix C. Polynomial D. Determinant
