In marketing, communication is the lifeblood of all activities because it connects businesses with customers, informs them about products, and persuades them to make purchasing decisions. Without effective communication, even the best products may fail to reach their intended audience. Marketing communication also builds relationships, fosters trust, and enhances brand reputation. For example, a company that consistently communicates clearly and positively is more likely to retain loyal customers. Fill in the blank: Effective marketing communication helps to build ______ between businesses and customers.

Each form plays a unique role in shaping how messages are received and interpreted.

LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS For instance, oral communication allows immediate feedback, written communication provides permanence and clarity, while non-verbal communication reinforces or contradicts spoken words. A marketer must be skilled in all these forms to ensure messages are persuasive and credible. Fill in the blank: Written communication provides ______ and clarity in marketing messages. LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Pilot questions 1.1 1. Which term refers to the process of transmitting information, ideas, or feelings in marketing? 2. Why is communication considered the lifeblood of marketing activities? 3. Identify two benefits of effective communication in marketing. 4. List three main forms of communication used in marketing. 5. Which form of communication provides permanence and clarity? 1.2 Varieties And Processes Of Communication Activity 1.2.1 Written, oral, and non-verbal communication in marketing Written communication refers to the use of words in permanent formats such as reports, proposals, advertisements, and emails. It provides clarity and permanence, allowing messages to be revisited and analysed. Oral communication involves spoken words in contexts such as sales presentations, meetings, and customer service interactions. It allows immediate feedback and personal engagement. Non-verbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, tone of voice, and visual cues, which often reinforce or contradict spoken or written messages. Marketers must be able to combine these forms effectively. For example, a sales pitch may rely on oral communication, supported by written brochures and reinforced by non-verbal cues such as confident posture and eye contact. Fill in the blank: Oral communication allows ______ feedback and personal engagement. 1.2.2 Directness and indirectness in communication processes Directness in communication refers to presenting information in a straightforward and clear manner. It is often used when the message is routine, factual, or requires immediate action. Indirectness, on the other hand, involves presenting information in a more subtle or diplomatic way. This is particularly useful in persuasive communication, where the audience may resist the message if it is too blunt. For example, a direct message might state, “Buy this product today for a discount,” while an indirect message might say, “You may find this product beneficial, especially with the current discount available.” Both approaches have their place, and skilled marketers know when to apply each. Fill in the blank: Indirectness in communication is particularly useful in ______ communication.

Give one example of an indirect marketing message. 1.3 Constructing Effective Marketing Messages 1.3.1 Clear sentence and word construction Sentence construction refers to the arrangement of words to form meaningful statements. In marketing, clear sentence construction ensures that messages are easily understood by the target audience. Ambiguity or overly complex sentences can confuse customers and weaken the persuasive effect. Similarly, word choice is critical, as the right words can evoke emotions, highlight benefits, and encourage action. For example, a message that says, “Our product is affordable and reliable,” is more effective than one that says, “Our product is not expensive and seldom fails.” The former uses positive and straightforward language, while the latter relies on negatives that may create doubt. Fill in the blank: In marketing, clear sentence construction ensures that messages are ______ by the target audience.
