Each of these industries depends heavily on raw materials, whether sourced locally or imported, to sustain production and growth. Understanding the relationship between industries and their raw material requirements is crucial, as it provides insight into economic development, resource management, and opportunities for industrial expansion. This Series therefore sets the stage for appreciating how raw materials drive industrial activities across the country.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS The aim of this Series is to introduce you to the structure of Nigerian industries and to equip you with knowledge of their raw material needs, challenges, and opportunities. By the end of the Series, you will be able to connect industrial sectors with their resource demands and evaluate the implications for national development. We shall commence this Series by providing an overview of Nigerian industries, including their classification, key sectors, and regional distribution. Next, we will examine the raw material requirements of these industries, focusing on manufacturing, agricultural inputs, and the balance between imported and locally sourced materials. Finally, we will wrap up by considering the challenges and opportunities in raw material supply, highlighting issues of availability, logistics, and the potential for local substitution to strengthen industrial growth. Series Learning Outcomes Upon completing this Series, you should be able to: • describe the classification of Nigerian industries, including manufacturing, processing, and service-based sectors, • explain the key sectors contributing to industrial growth in Nigeria, • analyse the regional distribution of industries across Nigeria, • identify the major raw materials required by manufacturing industries, • explain the role of agricultural raw materials in industrial applications, • differentiate between imported and locally sourced raw materials used in Nigerian industries, • evaluate the challenges of availability and accessibility of raw materials in Nigeria, • assess the impact of supply chain and logistics on raw material provision, and • appraise opportunities for local substitution and industrial development through raw material supply. 1.1 Overview of Nigerian Industries 1.1.1 Classification of industries Industries in Nigeria can be broadly classified into manufacturing industries, processing industries, and service-based industries. Manufacturing industries are those that transform raw materials into finished goods, such as textiles, cement, and automobile assembly. Processing industries focus on refining or altering raw materials into usable forms, for example, food processing and petroleum refining. Service-based industries provide intangible products such as banking, telecommunications, and education, which support the functioning of the economy.

Figure 1.1 Classification of Nigerian industries 1.1.2 Key sectors contributing to industrial growth Nigeria’s industrial growth is driven by several key sectors, including oil and gas, agriculture, construction, telecommunications, and manufacturing. The oil and gas sector remains the backbone of the economy, providing revenue and foreign exchange. The agriculture sector supports food security and supplies raw materials for agro-based industries. Construction contributes to infrastructure development, while telecommunications has expanded rapidly, connecting millions of Nigerians. Manufacturing, though still developing, plays a vital role in diversifying the economy. Fill in the blank: The backbone of Nigeria’s economy is the __________ and gas sector.

The South-South region hosts oil and gas industries, while the South-West is known for manufacturing, commerce, and services. The North has strong agricultural and agro-processing industries, supported by vast land resources. The South-East is recognised for trade and small-scale manufacturing. This regional distribution reflects both natural resource endowment and socio-economic development patterns. Fill in the blank: Oil and gas industries are concentrated in the __________ region of Nigeria.

What are the three main classifications of Nigerian industries? 2. Which industry transforms raw materials into finished goods? 3. Name two key sectors that contribute to Nigeria’s industrial growth. 4. Which sector is considered the backbone of Nigeria’s economy? 5. In which region of Nigeria are oil and gas industries concentrated? 1.2 Raw Material Requirements of Nigerian Industries 1.2.1 Major raw materials for manufacturing industries Manufacturing industries in Nigeria depend on a wide range of raw materials, which are basic substances used in production processes to create finished goods. Examples include iron ore for steel production, limestone for cement, cotton for textiles, and petrochemicals for plastics. The
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS availability of these raw materials directly influences industrial productivity and competitiveness. Where raw materials are scarce, industries may struggle to meet demand or rely heavily on imports. Fill in the blank: The basic substances used in production processes to create finished goods are called __________. Figure 1.3 Major raw materials for manufacturing industries 1.2.2 Agricultural raw materials and their industrial uses Nigeria’s agricultural sector provides significant agricultural raw materials, which are products from farming and livestock used in industrial applications. Examples include cocoa for beverages and confectionery, palm oil for food and cosmetics, hides and skins for leather, and rubber for tyres and footwear. These materials support agro-based industries and contribute to export earnings. The linkage between agriculture and industry demonstrates how resource availability can stimulate economic growth. Fill in the blank: Cocoa, palm oil, hides and skins, and rubber are examples of __________ raw materials.
LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Plate 1.2 Agricultural raw materials and their industrial uses 1.2.3 Imported versus locally sourced raw materials Industries in Nigeria rely on both imported raw materials, which are sourced from other countries, and locally sourced raw materials, which are obtained within Nigeria. Imported raw materials include specialised chemicals, machinery components, and advanced alloys, often required for high-tech industries. Locally sourced raw materials include agricultural products, minerals, and fossil fuels. While imports may provide quality and variety, they increase production costs and dependency on foreign exchange. Local sourcing, on the other hand, promotes self-reliance and supports domestic industries. Fill in the blank: Raw materials obtained within Nigeria are referred to as __________ sourced raw materials. Comparison of imported and locally sourced raw materials in Nigerian industries • Imported: specialised chemicals, machinery components, advanced alloys. • Locally sourced: agricultural products, minerals, fossil fuels. • Imports increase costs and dependency. • Local sourcing promotes self-reliance and industrial growth.
