The term tourism refers to the activity of travelling to places outside one’s usual environment for leisure, business, or other purposes, usually for less than a year. In early civilisations, such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, people journeyed to visit monuments, attend festivals, or enjoy coastal resorts. Hospitality was provided through inns, which were simple establishments offering food, drink, and shelter to travellers.
