The study of geologic sequences provides a foundation for understanding how different rock layers and formations are distributed across the country, and why they matter for both academic knowledge and practical

LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS applications such as mining and exploration. By examining these sequences, learners gain insight into the broader geological history of Nigeria and its significance within the African continent. The aim of this Series is to equip you with the ability to identify, describe, and analyse the major geologic sequences in Nigeria, while also appreciating their relevance to the basement complex and sedimentary domains. We shall commence this Series by providing an overview of geologic sequences in Nigeria, focusing on their definition, significance, and distribution. Next, we will move on to examine the major sedimentary sequences, highlighting their characteristics and examples of key basins. Following that, we will explore the basement complex sequences, considering their features and relationship with sedimentary domains. Finally, we will conclude by discussing how these sequences can be recognized in the field, with practical examples drawn from Nigerian geology. Series Learning Outcomes Upon completing this Series, you should be able to: SLO 1.1 define geologic sequences and explain their significance within the Nigerian context, SLO 1.2 describe the characteristics and distribution of major sedimentary sequences in Nigeria, SLO 1.3 analyse the features of basement complex sequences and evaluate their relationship with sedimentary domains, and SLO 1.4 demonstrate techniques for recognising and identifying geologic sequences during fieldwork in Nigeria. 1.1 Overview of Geologic Sequences In Nigeria 1.1.1 Definition and significance of geologic sequences A geologic sequence is a succession of rock layers that represents a continuous record of deposition over time. Each sequence reflects changes in environmental conditions, tectonic activity, and sediment supply. In Nigeria, geologic sequences are important because they provide evidence of the country’s geological history, help in locating natural resources, and guide exploration activities such as mining and petroleum prospecting. Geologic sequences also serve as a framework for understanding how different rock units are related to one another. They allow geologists to reconstruct past environments and evaluate the processes that shaped the Nigerian landscape.

Figure 1.1: Simplified stratigraphic column of Nigerian rock sequences 1.1.2 General distribution of sequences across Nigeria Nigeria’s geology is broadly divided into two domains: the basement complex and the sedimentary basins. The basement complex consists mainly of Precambrian rocks, including granites and schists, while the sedimentary basins contain younger sequences deposited during the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. The basement complex is found largely in the western, northern, and central parts of Nigeria, whereas the sedimentary basins dominate the eastern and southern regions. This distribution is significant because it influences the location of mineral deposits, petroleum reserves, and groundwater resources. Fill in the blank: Nigeria’s geology is broadly divided into the ______ complex and the sedimentary basins.

Why are geologic sequences important in Nigeria? Name the two major geological domains of Nigeria. In which regions of Nigeria is the basement complex predominantly found? What is the significance of the distribution of geologic sequences in Nigeria? 1.2 Major Sedimentary Sequences 1.2.1 Characteristics of sedimentary sequences Sedimentary sequences are layers of rocks formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediments such as sand, clay, and organic matter. These sequences often preserve fossils and other evidence of past environments, making them valuable for

LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS reconstructing Earth’s history. In Nigeria, sedimentary sequences are particularly important because they host petroleum reserves, coal deposits, and groundwater aquifers. Sedimentary rocks are typically arranged in horizontal layers, known as strata, which reflect successive periods of deposition. The thickness, composition, and fossil content of these strata provide clues about the conditions under which they were formed. Fill in the blank: Sedimentary sequences are layers of rocks formed from the accumulation and compaction of ______. Figure 1.2: Typical arrangement of sedimentary strata 1.2.2 Examples of key sedimentary basins Nigeria contains several major sedimentary basins, which are large depressions filled with sedimentary rocks. The most prominent include the Niger Delta Basin, the Benue Trough, and the Sokoto Basin. Each basin has unique characteristics and economic importance. The Niger Delta Basin is renowned for its petroleum reserves, making it the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry. The Benue Trough is notable for its complex geology and mineral deposits, including lead and zinc.

LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS The Sokoto Basin contains significant limestone deposits, which are used in cement production. These basins illustrate how sedimentary sequences contribute to Nigeria’s economy and development. Fill in the blank: The Niger Delta Basin is renowned for its ______ reserves. Plate 1.2: Major sedimentary basins in Nigeria Pilot questions 1.2 What are sedimentary sequences, and how are they formed? Why are sedimentary sequences important in Nigeria? What term refers to horizontal layers of sedimentary rocks? Name three major sedimentary basins in Nigeria. Which basin is the centre of Nigeria’s oil industry? 1.3 Basement Complex Sequences 1.3.1 Features of basement complex rocks The basement complex refers to the oldest group of rocks in Nigeria, formed during the Precambrian era. These rocks include granites, gneisses, and schists, which are typically

LA-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS hard, crystalline, and resistant to weathering. Because of their age and stability, basement complex rocks form the foundation upon which younger sedimentary sequences were later deposited. These rocks are significant because they provide evidence of ancient geological processes such as metamorphism and magmatism. They also host important mineral deposits, including gold, tin, and gemstones, which have contributed to Nigeria’s mining history. Fill in the blank: The basement complex refers to the oldest group of rocks in Nigeria, formed during the ______ era. Figure 1.3: Typical crystalline basement rocks of Nigeria 1.3.2 Relationship between basement complex and sedimentary domains The basement complex and sedimentary domains are closely related. The basement complex forms the underlying bedrock, while sedimentary basins developed on top of it during later geological periods. This relationship explains why Nigeria’s geology is often described as a combination of ancient crystalline rocks and younger sedimentary deposits. In many areas, the contact between basement rocks and sedimentary sequences is marked by unconformities, which represent gaps in the geological record. These unconformities are important because they indicate periods of erosion or non-deposition before new sediments were laid down. Fill in the blank: The contact between basement rocks and sedimentary sequences is often marked by ______, which represent gaps in the geological record.
