la-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Introduction Where much of your earlier training has focused on the individual patient, this course turns attention to the broader environment, both natural and occupational, within which entire communities live and work, and the specific health practices needed to keep that environment safe. Picture a rapidly growing Nigerian city, where new residential areas continue to spring up faster than the water, sanitation, and waste disposal infrastructure needed to serve them, creating conditions that can silently undermine the health of an entire population long before any individual patient ever presents to a clinic. Understanding environmental and occupational health practice, and the process of urbanisation that so often drives these challenges in Nigeria, is the essential foundation for everything that follows in this course. The aim of this Series is to equip you with a clear understanding of environmental and occupational health practices, and the health implications of urbanisation in Nigeria. This Series begins with an introduction to environmental health, before turning to an introduction to occupational health. Next, we examine urbanisation and its health implications, before concluding with the principles of environmental and occupational health practice. Series Learning Outcomes At the end of this Series, you should be able to: • SLO 1.1: define environmental health and describe its scope and the environmental determinants of health • SLO 1.2: describe the history and development of environmental health practice • SLO 1.3: define occupational health and describe the relationship between environmental and occupational health

la-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS • SLO 1.4: describe the process of urbanisation in Nigeria and its implications for infrastructure • SLO 1.5: describe the urban health challenges arising from urbanisation, and • SLO 1.6: describe the principles guiding environmental and occupational health practice, including multisectoral collaboration. 1.1 Introduction to Environmental Health 1.1.1 definition and scope of environmental health The health of populations shaped by their surroundings Environmental health is the branch of public health concerned with those aspects of human health, including quality of life, that are determined by physical, chemical, biological, and social factors in the external environment, and encompasses the assessment, correction, and prevention of environmental factors that could adversely affect the health of present and future generations. The scope of environmental health is broad, extending across air, water, and sanitation quality, safe food, adequate housing, and the built environment more generally, and encompassing the specific environmental pollution, food hygiene, and vector control topics examined in detail in the following two Series of this course. Fill in the blank: Environmental health is concerned with aspects of human health determined by physical, chemical, biological, and social factors in the external ________. 1.1.2 history and development of environmental health practice Formal environmental health practice traces its origins to the sanitary reform movements of nineteenth-century industrialising cities, where rapid, unplanned urban growth produced severe overcrowding and inadequate sanitation, leading directly to recurring outbreaks of diseases such as cholera and typhoid that eventually prompted organised public health intervention.

la-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS Over the subsequent century, environmental health practice expanded considerably beyond its original narrow focus on sanitation and infectious disease control to encompass a much broader range of environmental hazards, including chemical pollution and occupational exposures, reflecting a growing scientific understanding of the many different ways in which the surrounding environment can affect human health. Fill in the blank: Formal environmental health practice traces its origins to the sanitary reform movements of nineteenth-century industrialising ________. 1.1.3 environmental determinants of health Environmental determinants of health are the specific features of a population's surrounding environment that influence its overall health status, including access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, quality of housing, and exposure to environmental pollutants, each of which interacts with an individual's own biological and behavioural characteristics to shape their overall health outcomes. These environmental determinants often disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, and communities living in poverty with limited ability to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental exposures, meaning environmental health interventions frequently carry an important dimension of health equity, alongside their direct disease prevention benefits. Fill in the blank: Environmental determinants of health often disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, meaning environmental health interventions carry an important dimension of health ________.

Define environmental health. (Linked to SLO 1.1) 2. Describe the scope of environmental health practice. (Linked to SLO 1.1) 3. Explain the historical origins of formal environmental health practice. (Linked to SLO 1.2) 4. List three environmental determinants of health. (Linked to SLO 1.1) 5. Explain why environmental health interventions carry an important dimension of health equity. (Linked to SLO 1.1) 1.2 Introduction to Occupational Health 1.2.1 definition and scope of occupational health Protecting health within the workplace Occupational health is the branch of public health concerned with the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social wellbeing of workers in all

la-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS occupations, achieved through prevention of departures from health caused by working conditions, and protection of workers from health risks arising from factors adverse to their wellbeing. The scope of occupational health extends across the identification and control of workplace hazards, such as chemical exposures, noise, and physical strain, the adaptation of work to the capabilities of individual workers, and the specific occupational health services examined in detail in a later Series of this course. Fill in the blank: Occupational health is concerned with the promotion of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social wellbeing of workers in all ________. 1.2.2 the work environment and health The work environment encompasses the full range of physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial conditions present at a place of work, each capable of influencing worker health, either positively, through appropriate working conditions, or negatively, through exposure to hazards such as excessive noise, harmful chemicals, or poorly designed physical workstations. Certain occupational sectors, including agriculture, mining, and industrial manufacturing, carry particularly significant occupational health risks given the nature of the physical and chemical exposures involved, and represent important priority areas for occupational health practice, particularly within the Nigerian economic context, where these sectors employ a substantial proportion of the working population. Fill in the blank: Certain occupational sectors, including agriculture, mining, and industrial manufacturing, carry particularly significant occupational health ________. 1.2.3 relationship between environmental and occupational health Environmental health and occupational health are closely related fields, since the workplace itself represents a specific, defined environment, and many principles of environmental hazard

la-NET | ONLINE LEARNING VIDEO PLATFORM FOR POST-SECONDARY & HIGHER INSTITUTION STUDENTS identification, assessment, and control, discussed earlier in this Series, apply equally within the occupational setting, explaining why these two fields are frequently addressed together, as in this course. An important distinction, however, is that occupational health specifically addresses the workplace environment and its effects on a defined population of workers, while environmental health more broadly addresses the wider community environment and its effects on the general population, meaning the two fields, while overlapping considerably, are not entirely identical in their focus and scope. Fill in the blank: Occupational health specifically addresses the workplace environment and its effects on a defined population of ________. Figure 1.2: A factory worker wearing protective equipment on an industrial production line. Pilot questions 1.2 1. Define occupational health. (Linked to SLO 1.3) 2.
