The Arabic novel emerged in the 19th century as a result of cultural contact with Europe, the spread of printing, education, journalism, and translation. Early Arabic novels were influenced by Western literary forms and traditional Arabic storytelling. Jurji Zaydan and Muhammad Husayn Haykal , especially through Zaynab (1914), contributed greatly to the development of the modern Arabic novel.
