Let us be completely honest for a second. Physics has a bit of a bad reputation in Nigerian secondary schools. For many students, the word alone brings up images of impossible calculations, confusing graphs, and formulas that seem to have more Greek letters than actual English. Most people see it as the monster standing between them and a career in Engineering, Medicine, or Technology.

But here is the truth that the top students know: Physics is not about memorizing a thousand different equations. It is about understanding how the world works. Once you stop seeing it as a collection of random rules and start seeing it as the language of the universe, that A grade in WAEC, JAMB, or NECO becomes much easier to reach. If you are tired of struggling with your calculations and you want a practical, human way to master this subject, this guide is for you.


1. Fix Your Math Foundation First

Physics is essentially applied Mathematics. If you are struggling with Physics, there is a 70 percent chance that your real problem is actually Math. You cannot solve a problem on projectile motion if you do not understand trigonometry. You cannot find the refractive index in optics if you are confused by sines and cosines.

Before you dive deep into your Physics textbook, take a week to brush up on your basic Algebra. Make sure you know how to change the subject of a formula quickly and accurately. If you have an equation like V equals I multiplied by R, and you are asked to find I, you should be able to rearrange that in your sleep. If you struggle with fractions, decimals, or basic powers of ten (scientific notation), fix those first. Physics teachers often say that Math is the tool, and Physics is the house you build with it. 2. Understand the Concepts Before the Formulas

One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to cram formulas without knowing what they mean. For example, many people can recite Newton’s Second Law: Force equals mass times acceleration. But if you ask them what happens to the acceleration if the mass is doubled while the force stays the same, they get confused.

When you study a topic like Heat Energy, do not just look at the formula for specific heat capacity. Instead, think about why a metal spoon gets hot faster than a wooden one. When studying Pressure, think about why a woman in high heels might sink into soft mud while a man in flat shoes does not. When you connect Physics to real life, you stop "cramming" and start "knowing." Once you understand the concept, the formula will actually make sense to you, and you will not have to struggle to remember it during the exam.


3. Master the Big Topics

While every part of the syllabus is important, some topics are "heavyweights." In WAEC and NECO, these topics almost always carry the most marks, and in JAMB, they appear more frequently.

Mechanics is the foundation. You must master things like motion, work, energy, power, and machines. If you do not understand Mechanics, you will struggle with almost everything else.

Electricity and Magnetism come next. You need to be very comfortable with Ohm’s law, series and parallel circuits, and the cost of electrical energy.

Waves and Optics are also huge. Understand how light behaves, how mirrors work, and the properties of sound waves.

Lastly, do not ignore Modern Physics. Topics like radioactivity and half-life are often shorter and easier to solve once you get the hang of them. They are like "bonus marks" for students who take the time to read them.


4. Use Past Questions as a Blueprint

If you want an A, you must become a regular customer of past questions. But there is a right way and a wrong way to use them. The wrong way is to look at the question, look at the answer at the back, and say "Oh, I see it." That is a trap. You have learned nothing that way.

The right way is to simulate the exam. Take a year, for example, WAEC 2023, set a timer, and try to solve the entire thing without looking at your notes. When you are done, mark yourself. The areas where you failed are the areas where you need to go back to your textbook.

For JAMB, speed is your biggest enemy. You have 40 questions to answer in a very short time. You need to practice how to solve questions quickly without using a sophisticated calculator. For WAEC and NECO, the theory part is where you show your workings. Learn how to state laws exactly as they are written. If a law says "at constant temperature," you must include that phrase or you will lose marks.


5. The Art of the Diagram and the Unit

In Physics, a picture is often worth ten formulas. Whether you are dealing with a pulley system, a circuit diagram, or a ray of light passing through a glass prism, always draw a diagram. Even if the question does not ask for one, draw it in your rough work. It helps you visualize what is happening and prevents you from making silly mistakes.

Then, there is the issue of units. This is where many "A" students fall to "C" students. In WAEC and NECO, if you solve a beautiful calculation and get the number 50, but you forget to write "Hz" for frequency or "J" for energy, you will lose marks. Always check your units. Also, make sure all your values are in the same system before you start calculating. If the mass is in grams and the velocity is in meters per second, convert that mass to kilograms first.


6. Practical Skills are Not Just for the Lab

For WAEC and NECO, you will face a practical examination. Many students treat the lab like a playground until a week before the exam. Do not do that. Learn how to read a vernier caliper and a micrometer screw gauge. Understand how to avoid parallax errors when reading a burette or a ruler.

The practical exam is designed to see if you can actually apply what you have read. Practice how to plot graphs correctly. Know which variable goes on the vertical axis (y-axis) and which goes on the horizontal (x-axis). A neat, well-labeled graph with a correctly calculated slope is an easy way to pack a lot of marks into your total score.


7. Leverage Modern Study Tools

You do not have to do this alone. We live in an age where information is everywhere. If a particular topic like Electromagnetic Induction is making your head spin, look for a video or an online lesson that explains it simply.
