5 Nigerian Universities Offering Admission Without JAMB UTME
For many young Nigerians, gaining admission into a university can feel like standing before a locked door. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, known as UTME, is often the biggest lock. A student may study hard, sit for JAMB and still miss the cut-off mark. Another may score well but lose a place because the university cannot admit everyone. Some students try again and again; each delay brings more pain and doubt.
But UTME is not the only road into a Nigerian university.
A growing number of universities licensed by the National Universities Commission, known as the NUC, now admit students without JAMB UTME. These schools mainly use O’Level qualifications. This route gives fresh hope to students who are tired of repeated JAMB attempts or need a more flexible way to earn a degree.
The following institutions offer this option.
1. Miva Open University
Miva Open University is described as the first fully operational private open university in Nigeria. Students can apply directly without writing JAMB UTME.
An applicant must have five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics. The results must be obtained in no more than two sittings. Once the applicant meets these requirements and completes the school’s admission process, UTME is not needed.
Miva uses technology to deliver lessons. Students learn through pre-recorded videos, PDF materials and an online learning management system. They do not need to sit inside a classroom every day. They can study from home or another suitable place; they can also learn at a pace that fits their lives.
This model can help people who work, care for family members or live far from a university campus. However, flexible learning still demands time, effort and discipline.
Tuition at Miva starts at ₦150,000 per semester. Its programmes focus on practical skills that students can use at work. Study areas include technology, business and management. The goal is to help students build useful skills and become ready for real careers.
2. National Open University of Nigeria
The National Open University of Nigeria, widely called NOUN, is Nigeria’s first university created mainly for open and distance learning. It does not require candidates to write JAMB UTME before applying for admission.
Applicants must meet the normal O’Level requirements for their chosen programmes. They must then apply directly through the official NOUN portal. The university checks their qualifications and handles admission without using a UTME score.
NOUN has learning centres across the country, and its wide reach makes it open to many students. Its self-paced system is useful for people who cannot follow the fixed timetable of a regular campus.
3. Iconic Open University
Iconic Open University is one of the newer schools in Nigeria’s growing open education system. It offers flexible learning supported by technology, and applicants do not need UTME to seek admission.
Candidates must present valid O’Level results and provide the other documents required by the university. They must also meet the normal conditions for their chosen programme. The lack of UTME does not remove every admission rule; it only removes the need for a JAMB score.
Iconic Open University presents itself as a more personal option than the common campus system. Its structure is made for students who want flexible but organised university education.
4. West Midlands Open University, Ibadan
West Midlands Open University is based in Ibadan and is licensed by the NUC. It operates mainly online and admits qualified students without JAMB UTME.
The university delivers its degree programmes through remote learning. This allows students to study away from a physical campus. Applicants must still have the required O’Level results, and they must complete the university’s internal admission process.
Admission still has standards. The difference is simple; the university uses O’Level qualifications and its own process instead of UTME. For students who need to learn from home, this can remove a heavy barrier.
5. Al-Muhibbah Open University, Abuja
Al-Muhibbah Open University is based in Abuja and received its licence in 2023. It provides remote learning across several undergraduate programmes.
Admission is based on a candidate’s O’Level performance rather than a UTME score. Applicants must meet the entry conditions for their chosen courses, but they do not need to follow the usual JAMB UTME route.
Its distance learning structure supports students who cannot attend a traditional campus. This may include people with jobs, family duties or other limits that make daily classes difficult. They can study remotely while working toward a recognised degree.
JUPEB and IJMB Offer Another Path
Open universities are not the only options. Students can also consider the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, known as JUPEB, or the Interim Joint Matriculation Board, known as IJMB.
These programmes may help successful candidates gain admission into the 200-level of a university without sitting UTME. However, the journey is not instant. Students usually spend between nine and 12 months in pre-university study before taking the required examinations.
JUPEB and IJMB can also be costly. More importantly, joining either programme does not promise automatic university admission. A candidate must perform well, and the final decision still depends on the rules and judgement of the university involved.
A JAMB Result Should Not Bury a Dream
Repeated JAMB failure or long admission delays can break a student’s confidence. Yet one examination should not make a person believe that university education is forever out of reach.
Miva Open University, NOUN, Iconic Open University, West Midlands Open University and Al-Muhibbah Open University provide another road. They are NUC-approved institutions, and they base admission mainly on O’Level qualifications rather than UTME performance.
Their online and self-paced systems give students room to learn from different places and manage study around real life. The path still requires money, discipline and hard work; but for many students, it offers something deeply important. It offers a door that is still open.
